From the Principal
Since 2021 Cathedral Staff, Mr Guilfoyle and Mrs Condon have been working with a team to bring clean water to the people of Hornai in Timor Leste. This project is a beautiful example of faith in action and we are so proud of their commitment to bring the love and dignity of Christ to our sisters and brothers in Timor Leste. At a time when as a society we are often consumed by what we have and want, we applaud the message and actions that encourage us to consider more about what we can give. Thank you to the students and families who have supported this project. We look forward to hearing about how we can continue to support important projects like this in the future.
Camille da Silva Tavares | Principal
Congratulations
We have been blessed with such beautiful news over the past months. A special congratulations to Abbie and Luke Bowman on the arrival of baby Archie and to our school counsellor Jordana Kissell and her husband Andrew on the arrival of baby Spencer. We have included below pictures of the two new latest arrivals along with Jerdin Jenkins’ baby Zander. Don’t forget to email the school with any special additions to your family so that we can include them in the newsletter.
Religious Education & Catholic Life
Christian Living Camp
At the end of Term 2, Year 6 spent three days at Lake Burrendong as part of their Christian Living Camp as an opportunity for the grade to spend time together outside of their regular learning environment.
Students participated in a series of activities around endurance, initiative, teamwork, responsibility, respect and fun! We also spent time in prayer, reflecting on our unique gifts & talents and what we all individually bring to the wider group. Thank you to Mrs Tavares, Miss Toole and Mrs Gallagher for all that they contributed to this wonderful experience, along with staff from NSW Sport & Recreation. What a truly unforgettable experience!
Mass this Friday!
At the end of this week we will celebrate the Feast of Ss Joachim & Anne and the gift of those in our lives that fulfil the amazing role of grandparents. At 10:00am we will celebrate Mass and invite families to join students for morning tea at Recess afterwards. We hope that you can join us for this special day.
Sacramental Program:
It has been wonderful to hear about many of our students receiving sacraments through Parish Masses recently. Please email a photo through to me if you wish to have this celebrated in the school newsletter. We kindly request that names are not visible in the provided photograph
Information on First Penance, First Holy Communion and Confirmation and how the parish based, but school supported, Sacramental Program will function this year was provided last term via grade overviews, school and the parish information session in Term 1.. Please speak to your child’s teacher or myself if you require further information about registrations.
Monday Liturgy & Assembly:
Please join us each week between 9:00 and 9:30 am as we pray together and acknowledge the achievements of those in our school community. Classes, Grades and Committees each take responsibility for leading these celebrations and it is a wonderful way to find out all of the special things happening inside and outside of our learning spaces.
Our Parish
We are proud to be an important part of the Cathedral Parish of Ss Michael & John. Please follow this link for more information about the many formation opportunities, ministries and other ways that you can participate in the life of our parish.

Library
Welcome back! In the Library we are looking forward to another great term of borrowing, reading, learning research skills and sharing fantastic books together (especially the Children’s Book Council of Australia Shortlisted books for 2024!).
The Book Week theme this year is Reading is Magic. As a whole school we dress up on Friday the 16th of August in a costume based on this theme. There are competitions, a special lunch order, a costume parade and a preloved book sale.

Knit In
On Friday 28th June, members of the school Mini Vinnies and Agriculture Clubs joined together to host a Knit-In. Along with the clothing donations collected, we raised $397 for the St Vincent De Paul Winter Appeal. Thank you to all those families who donated clothes, sponsorship money or time to attend on the day. We are very grateful for your assistance.
We would also like to thank Mrs Angelucci for her efforts this term assisting the Agriculture Club members growing fresh produce used to create a delicious soup served to our guests on Friday. Mrs Vickers also donated some fresh produce from her garden to compliment the school supplies. Club members proudly served the soup and waited on the guests who attended the Knit-In.
Mini Vinnies Club members displayed beautiful manners as they worked with the guests to create scarves and beanies. It was lovely to see the interactions of the children working with members of the wider School and Parish community for this wonderful cause. At the end of the Knit-In, Mrs Kim Colbourne, the Vinnies Regional Schools and Youth Engagement Coordinator, presented our school with a certificate of appreciation. A big thank you to all students and staff involved in this special event.

Exiting the School Grounds Safely
This week as we begin the term we teach our students about exiting the school safely. We ask you to support this by holding your child’s hand (if a younger student) and always crossing at the pedestrian crossing if you need to cross the road. Please do not cross the street where the buses arrive.
We also ask that only students walking home or to a workplace use the Walkers duty as staff are unable to provide supervision to students on the street. Parents picking up students by car should make their way on foot to a designated pick up area after they have parked safely.
We thank you for your patience at pick up time to ensure safety for all of our children.
Our students who use the Kelso Interchange have also had some additional instruction this morning around the new measures in place at the interchange. This includes where students should wait and how they should behave at the interchange. We thank the staff at Denison College for leading this initiative and supporting our students at the interchange.
Our student expectations are listed below:

Wellbeing
Did you know …. 80% of our happiness is derived from:
- Friendship.
- Health.
- Work fulfillment.
- Loving relationships.
- Spirituality.
When you do something kind for someone else your brain releases the love hormone oxytocin. This makes you feel good too. Check out Martin Heppell from The Resilience Project talking about being kind and the benefits of kindness.
“Kindness is the greatest wealth of all. Small acts of kindness last longer than a lifetime”
- Eddie Jaku (Author of ‘The Happiest Man on Earth’)
