From the Principal
Welcome!
It was a beautiful evening on the Keppel St playground, welcoming our families for 2025. Our Welcome Picnic has become a loved tradition giving the opportunity for our existing families to welcome our new families to Cathedral.
A culture of welcome is not something that can be manufactured overnight but is built on the many interactions that take place each day. This annual event is such a special way to begin each year. We thank our P&F for organising this event; the bubble wands and balloon garland were a hit! We also thank each member of our community who take the time to connect with others. From the caring parents who give a smile and kind word at drop off, to the parents who bring other families along to school events (it’s always easier attending with a friend), taking the time to connect with others is a beautiful example to our students and exemplifies our call to bring the love of Jesus to all.
Thank you Cathedral for creating this culture of welcome!

Our Newsletter will be published fortnightly in 2025 and we encourage you to access the Google Cathedral Community Calendar so that you can stay current with school dates and celebrations.

Class In Focus - KM
Students in KM have had a wonderful start to their schooling and have been enjoying lots of early Literacy activities, Maths games, Religion lessons and being involved in School Mass Events. Now that we have finished our Ready for Learning Program, we have enjoyed starting our phonics lessons and writing sounds and words we are learning. KM has been lucky enough to be able to spend time with our Year 5 Buddies.

Miss Morris | Kindy Teacher
Class In Focus - 2IC
What a fantastic few weeks it has been in 2IC! Students have been working hard during reading groups, building their fluency and comprehension skills. In Mathematics, they have been learning different addition strategies to confidently add two-digit numbers. In HSIE, students have been busy researching various environments, including the incredible Great Barrier Reef. During Religious Education, we have been learning about Lent and exploring ways to contribute to Project Compassion, reflecting on how we can help others in need. It’s been wonderful to see students enthusiasm and curiosity shine in all areas of learning!

Miss Inwood & Mrs Cashen | 2IC Teachers
Class in Focus - 3TJ
3TJ has had a wonderful and busy start to the year! Although it has been busy, it has also been filled with lots of fun and learning. We have been working hard this week, especially during our Mathematics lessons. Students have been learning to use various strategies, such as partitioning and bridging, to effectively add and subtract different numbers. 3TJ have also been working on creating masterful art pieces, including detailed self-portraits and vibrant warm and cool landscapes. Using a variety of art materials, they are exploring different techniques to express their creativity and develop their artistic skills. Each piece reflects their unique perspective and growing talent!

Miss Toole & Mrs Jenkins | 3TJ Teachers
Class In Focus - 5A
In our exploration of contact and non-contact forces, we focused on how energy transforms between different forms. One of the key experiments involved designing parachutes to study air resistance. We used fair testing principles, varying the parachute designs, and dropped them from the balcony, recording the time it took for each parachute to land. Through trial and error, we successfully improved our designs, enhancing the air resistance and creating effective parachutes!

Mrs Angelucci | 5A Teachers
Morning Drop Off

School supervision begins at 8:30am.
We ask that students are not dropped off at or around the school before this time as adequate supervision can not be provided.
Afternoon Pick Up

Below are our afternoon procedures that we ask students and families to follow.
Walkers - Only students walking to a workplace or home should join the walkers. If you are picking your child up and you are parked across any nearby road, then you need to walk over to school to collect your child from the William St or George St collection point.
Teachers only escort students across the crossings on William, Keppel and George Sts. Students are then left to make their way home. Please ensure that your child has the knowledge of and ability to walk the safest route home before allowing them to cross busy streets. Please note that not all streets around the school have pedestrian crossings.
George St - If collecting students on the George St exit, please walk to students who will be seated on the pavers for collection. Students are not allowed to meet you on the street. If parked on the opposite side of the road, please use the pedestrian crossing and do not cross in front of or behind buses.
William St - If collecting students on the William St exit, please collect students from the gate. If parked on the opposite side of the road please use the pedestrian crossing on William St.
Please hold your child’s hand when exiting the school grounds.
We thank you for supporting these procedures and for modelling safe and calm behaviours at pick up time.
Religious Education & Catholic Life

Delany & Harmony Day
Our school community is excited to celebrate Delany & Harmony Day on Friday, 28th March 2025. This special occasion brings us together to celebrate Delany House and their House Patron, Bishop Daniel Delany, while also honoring the rich cultural diversity within our community.
These two celebrations align beautifully, as both Delany Day and Harmony Day emphasise the values of faith, inclusion, and community—reminding us of the importance of coming together to celebrate our shared history and diverse cultural identities.
Bishop Daniel Delany was born in Ireland in 1747 and dedicated his life to education and faith. Overcoming challenges, he renewed the faith of his community and established the Sisters of Saint Brigid (Brigidines) and the Brothers of Saint Patrick (Patricians). The Patrician Brothers later came to Australia, opening schools such as St Patrick’s on the site of our current Cathedral School. This legacy of faith, inclusion, and education inspires us today.
Harmony Week is a time to celebrate Australia’s multicultural success, highlighting inclusiveness, respect, and belonging. Our cultural diversity is one of our greatest strengths, built on over 65,000 years of First Nations cultures and enriched by the contributions of migrants from nearly 300 different ancestries.
- Attire: Students are encouraged to wear green, orange, or cultural dress, and we kindly ask for a gold coin donation to support Project Compassion fundraising.
- Mass: The day will begin with a Mass at 9:15 am in the Cathedral Church. Please note this earlier start time.
- Picnic Recess: Families are warmly invited to join us for a shared picnic recess at 10:30 am.
- Activities: From 11:10 am to 12:30 pm, students will enjoy a variety of games and activities as part of the celebration.
This day is an opportunity to reflect on the faith and traditions of Bishop Delany, St Patrick, and the cultural diversity that enriches our school and community.
We look forward to sharing this special day with our school, faith, and local communities. Thank you for your continued support.
Reconciliation
Thank you to our Year 4 and Year 6 students who have taken part in the First Rite of Reconciliation over the past few weeks. In the coming weeks, Year 3 and Year 5 students will receive reminders from our School Chaplain about this important part of our Lenten preparations and commitments as Catholics. They will also have the opportunity to spend time in the Cathedral, reflecting on the significance of reconciliation during this sacred season.
Sacramental Program
Thank you to our families that were able to attend the Sacramental Information Meeting recently, where Fr Paul, along with our parish schools RECs outlined the sacramental program for 2025. If you were unable to attend I have some spare information sheets available for families if needed.

IN OUR PARISH
We are proud to be an important part of the Cathedral Parish of Ss Michael & John. For information about our parish please click here. This includes Mass Times, Ministries, Sacraments and current edition and archived stories from the Catholic Observer and Parish Bulletin.
